BEKSÊ (ŞAHİNLİ) CASTLE

Beksê Castle is located in the Şahinli hamlet of Dere village, which is within the borders of Batman province, Sason district. Şahinli hamlet is located 6 km northwest of Sason district.

Bekse Castle was built in an east-west direction on a steep rock that dominates the region, 1km west of Şahinli hamlet. There is no inscription in the castle. Bekse Castle has been largely destroyed today, and only a small part of the fortification walls, which are only defensive structures from the castle, have remained intact. The preserved fortification structure is located at the western end of the castle, and its preserved length is 18.60 m, its height varies but 9.10 m, and its thickness is 1.90 m. Irregular rubble stone and cas mortar were used as construction materials. The boundaries of the castle are not clear due to the destruction. Considering the surface finds, Beksê Castle was built on an area measuring 142 meters in east-west direction and 25 meters in north-south direction. There are scattered stones on the surface of the castle that do not form any architectural integrity. During the surveys carried out in Bekse Castle, ceramic samples of which the period could not be identified were found.
